If you hire a national roofing contractor to work on your Charlotte or Concord, NC, home, they might do a good job — but if they don’t, you might not have much recourse beyond an expensive lawsuit. A company with thousands of Yelp reviews isn’t going to be bothered much by another one-star. If you have a complaint, there will probably be several layers of personnel between you and anybody who can address your problem in a meaningful way.
Instead, you should look for a local company, one that absolutely depends on positive word of mouth within the community in which it operates. It’s also likely to be much smaller, so if you do have any complaints you can take them straight to someone who can do something about them. Ask your friends and neighbors if there are any contractors they would recommend.
Watch out for frauds
Of course, the one downside of small companies is the risk of being taken in by a fraud. There are any number of self-declared contractors who will demand payment up front and do substandard work or no work at all in return. These people usually show up right after a storm and offer to perform an inspection of your roof. (If you let them up there, sometimes they’ll damage your roof themselves.)
The good news is that there’s a sure-fire way to rule out these contractors — hire one that’s been in business for at least ten years. No dishonest contractor ever lasts that long.
Groups who provide ratings of contractors
Look at ratings of contractors from the Better Business Bureau and Angie’s List. The Better Business Bureau has been around for over a hundred years. It never endorses a specific business or product — they only rate businesses. The BBB also recommends you go to home shows, get six or seven bids on any project, ask about work, materials, cost and terms of payment, ask contractors for a list of previous customers, pay by check or credit card, check for licenses, permits and insurance, and get everything in writing. They also advise you never do business with a contractor who tries to pressure you. Angie’s List, unlike the BBB, is only a little over 20 years old. Its work began with construction contractors and home and lawn care services. It also rates contractors.
