You won’t save time or money by trying to fix your own roof — in fact, you’re more likely to waste both, by inadvertently damaging your own roof or doing repairs that will need to be redone later. Roofing company employees know how to lay down roofing felt or some similar material first, then nail the shingles down on top of it. They also know how to cover exposed nailheads, protecting them against rust and seepage.
That’s assuming you don’t get hurt doing it by losing your footing. Unlike the people who work at a roofing company, you aren’t likely to have much experience walking around on a sloping roof, possibly with a smooth surface, experiencing occasional gusts of wind. Anyway, if you check the warranty on your roof, there’s a good chance it’ll say that having roof repairs done by anyone but a licensed contractor will void the warranty. That especially includes you.
Find a roofing company instead
First, get the names of as many roofing companies as you can within the area. Ask your friends and neighbors for recommendations. Then check those names at the North Carolina Licensing Board for General Contractors website (www.nclbgc.org) to make sure the contractor has a license to work in the state. Having a license isn’t a guarantee of quality, but not having one is an automatic disqualifier. (See above regarding roof warranties.)
The roofing companies will have their own websites. (If they don’t, that’s another disqualifier.) Look at these sites. They should have testimonials from satisfied customers. The more of these there are, the better. Other sites to find reviews of roofing companies, both positive and negative, are Angie’s List, Google Places, Yahoo Local, Manta, Merchant Circle and YellowPages.com. A negative review isn’t the end of the world — first check to see what, if anything, the installer wrote in response. You should also check the ratings of roofing companies on the Better Business Bureau’s Web site. A good company will have a rating in the A range.
