How long has it been since you checked your roof for signs of damage?
This is actually the perfect time of year to do this. After sunrise, when it’s light enough but before it gets too hot, you should set a ladder against the house and climb up to check the shape of the roof. (Don’t actually climb on the roof. That’s best left to a professional residential roofing company.) Check the outside of the roof for signs of sagging, and make sure there isn’t any debris blocking the roof valleys. Look at the metal flashing around the chimneys, skylights, pipes and vents. Look at the shingles to make sure they aren’t cracked, warped or displaced. Check the rain gutters for clogs or leaks, and look for shed granules. A small leak in the seam of the gutter can be fixed with a caulking gun, but in most cases, if it looks as though anything is wrong, you should call a residential roofing company to fix it.
If you do need a residential roofing company, ask your friends and neighbors if they know of a good company that has done roofing work in your area for a long time. Check the BBB rating of any company you’re considering hiring. Get multiple bids, but don’t just hire the cheapest — they may be promising a better deal than they can deliver.
Looking at the attic
Get a thermometer that goes up to at least 130 degrees and put it in the attic. On a hot summer afternoon, go up to check the temperature. Ideally, it shouldn’t be more than 110 degrees inside. If it’s over 120 degrees, you have a ventilation problem, which could lead to warping of the shingles the same way overheating from the sun can. Putting a fan in a window might solve this. If that doesn’t work, you might need to call a residential roofing company and have them install a vent.
On a rainy day, check for leaks and excess moisture. Also, look at the framing structure from below.
