When did you last look at your roof?
Given the erratic winter/spring weather and constant shifts in temperature we’ve seen so far this year, it might be a good idea to check your roof for signs of damage. This is best done on a sunny morning when it isn’t too cold or too hot, or on a day when it’s raining. If it’s raining, go up into the attic and check for leaks and excess moisture. While you’re at it, look at the framing structure and see if it looks sound.
If it’s sunny, then as soon as it’s light enough, you should set a ladder against the house and climb up to look over the condition of the roof. (But don’t go so far as to climb on the roof. Some roofs can be damaged if you walk on them, and you will definitely be damaged if you fall off. Leave this sort of thing to your residential roofing company.)
Check the surface of the roof for sagging — this is a sign of a flaw in the supports, and must be corrected immediately. Make sure the roof valleys aren’t blocked by leaves or other debris. Check the condition of the metal flashing around the chimneys, skylights, pipes and vents. If you have a shingle roof, make sure they’re all still there and look at their condition. Check the rain gutters for clogs or leaks. A small leak in the seam of the gutter can be fixed with a caulking gun, but in most cases you should call a residential roofing company in Charlotte to fix any damage you see. While you’re doing this, look for granules from asphalt shingles — those are there to protect the shingle from ultraviolet light, and if they’re coming off, your shingles will need replacing before long.
If you do need a residential roofing company, look for a company that’s been in the area for a while. Ask your friends and neighbors if they have any recommendations. Check the BBB rating of any company you’re thinking of hiring.
