Roofing companies can install just about any type of roof on a home.  Most, though are decided by the architectural and historical style of a home.  Many people confused the type of roof with the type of roofing materials.  These are both important, but they style of roof on your home is decided when you home is designed.  Roofing materials, on the other hand, can be used on many different styles of roofs. Some of the most commonly used types of roof design

Flat roofs are easily built and do not require as much labor or material as most other roof styles.  This type of roof is commonly used on commercial buildings, especially warehouses and utility buildings.

Front gable

This is a type of gable roof with the gable on the front end.  These are typically found on Colonial or Cape Cod houses.

Cross gabled

This type of roof is usually found on a Cape Cod or Tudor style home.  The cross gable roof has too gables which cross each other.


This type of roof is common on bungalow homes.  The roof slopes up on every side.  It is pitched low so that rain and snow easily drain off the roof.

Cross hipped

This type of roof is similar to the hipped roof, but has two sections which cross.


Pavilion hipped

This type of roof is typically used on Colonial, Ranch, and Cape Cod style homes.



The gable roof is a flattened style often featured on Dutch colonials.  They are also found on American farmhouses.  When viewed from the side, they look more like a bell than a triangle.



This type of roof is common on Ranch style and French Chateau style homes.  Instead of the roof being a triangle, there is a flat area at the top.


Salt box

Salt box roofs are found on many two-stored Colonial homes, especially in the eastern United States.  This roof is gables, but their sides are not symmetrical.



This type of roof is inexpensive and easy to build.  The shed style roof is like the gabled roof and easily drains off rain and snow.
