Questions and answers about shingles

Shingles in Charlotte, NCFrequently asked questions about shingles

What’s the most popular kind of roofing?

As recently as 2014, asphalt shingles accounted for the biggest share of roofing demand.

How are asphalt shingles made?

First, the asphalt is mixed with a filler, such as limestone dust, which stabilizes it. Other things that can be added to the asphalt include copper, resin or rubber, each of which imparts different properties. The asphalt is laid down on and absorbed by a fibrous mat called felt, forming a durable and flexible material. In modern asphalt shingles, the felt is made of glass fiber, which never rots and doesn’t catch fire easily. Finally, the shingle is covered with reflective granules to shield it from ultraviolet light, which would otherwise degrade the asphalt.

How long does an asphalt shingle roof last?

Generally about 20 years. Shingle repair will probably be needed at some point during this time.

What sort of things can damage a shingle roof?

Many things. The most obvious is heavy storms — summer and fall are approaching, and even some distance from the coast, North Carolina does get hit by hurricanes. Constant sun can overheat the roof, leading to blistering and warping. Wind blowing over the shingles will force open the gaps between them until a loose or warped shingle is torn free. If the gutters of your roof become clogged, rainwater may pool on your roof, which can lead to water damage. In the summer, poor attic ventilation can lead to overheating, which, again, can warp the shingles.

What are some of the warning signs I need shingle repair?

If you don’t see any shingles that are warped, displaced or missing, check your roof gutters for whitish sand-like granules. Those are the reflective granules mentioned above, and if they’re wearing off, some of your shingles need to be replaced or soon will.

Is there any reason I can’t just do the shingle repair myself?

There are several reasons. For one thing, it’s dangerous — there’s more wind up there than there is on the ground, and you won’t be on a level surface. For another thing, if your roof is still under warranty, trying to fix it yourself will void the warranty, because the quality of your shingle repair is likely to be much less than that of a professional roofer.
