Roof shingles vs. metal vs. tile roofs: know the differences

Once you have decided to get a new roof, you next step is to choose your roofing material.  It is good to know the difference between the two most popular types of roofing materials, shingles and tile.  The other popular choice is metal roofing.  There are several factors which can impact your decision.   These include weather, type of house and size of the roof, and of course, your budget.

The differences

Tile is typically more expensive up front that roof shingles, however it lasts almost twice as long.  If you live in an area which gets a lot of high winds or bad storms, such as Charlotte or Concord NC, tile or metal may be a better choice since they can withstand this type of weather more readily than shingles.  Wind can loosen or completely tear off shingles causing extensive damage.  Tiles are heavier than shingles which makes it harder for wind to break them loose.

Another consideration is how hot or cold your weather gets.  If your region experiences extremely low temperatures or a great deal of snow, you may want to consider metal roofing.  Metal roofing is more efficient at getting rid of snow than any other type of roof material.  It also withstands very cold temperatures well.  Tile, on the other hand does well in warm or even hot climates.  It is very popular in the Southwest United States where it is typically hot and dry.  Roof shingles do the best in temperate climates.  They can withstand most types of weather, but will need to be replaced sooner than metal or tile.   For these reasons, it is wise to consider your weather when making the decision about your roofing material.   Advanced Roofing and Exteriors, one of Charlotte’s best roofing companies can advise you on the best roofing material for your home.

Durability

Of the three types of roofing materials, tile typically lasts the longest.  A well-constructed tile roof which is properly maintained can last up to 50 years.  Metal roofing is the next more durable, lasting up to 30 years if properly cared for.  Roof shingles can last up to 20 years, but must be routinely maintained and kept in good repair.  Of course, there are several grades of each of these roofing materials and the higher the grade, the more durable and long-lasting the roof.   Advanced Roofing and Exteriors can provide you examples of the various roofing materials available so you can make the best decision.

Impact on your home’s infrastructure

Another important consideration when choosing roofing materials is how heavy the roof will be and how well your house can support it.  Tile roofs can be very heavy, especially if the roof is large or has structural weaknesses.  Metal is not as heavy as tile, but weight should still be a consideration when choosing a metal roof.  Roof shingles weigh the least and can be used on just about any home.
