Asphalt roof shingles are relatively inexpensive to produce, easy to install and available almost everywhere.  These characteristics make asphalt roof shingles one of the most popular options for roofing material.  They are less costly than wood shakes, wood shingles, and tile, and today their guaranteed life span makes them competitive against other types of roofing materials.  There are more than a dozen companies manufacturing asphalt roof shingles in North America.  Advanced Roofing and Exteriors, one of the best roofing contractors in Charlotte and Concord NC can provide you information on all of the different types of asphalt roof shingles.

Asphalt roof shingles basics

Asphalt roof shingles come in two basic types: organic and fiberglass.  Organic asphalt roof shingles are made from recycled felt and then saturated with asphalt to make them waterproof.  They are also coated with adhesive asphalt mixed with ceramic granules.  Organic asphalt roof shingles contain almost 40 percent more asphalt than fiberglass roof shingles and are thicker and heavier.  They may also be more costly.

Fiberglass roof shingles are made from a base mat of woven fiberglass and then covered with a coating of asphalt to make them waterproof.  They are then coated with a topping of ceramic granules that help shield them from harmful UV rays.  Fiberglass asphalt shingles typically need less asphalt per shingle because the woven fiberglass mat helps provide strength and durability.  This makes fiberglass roof shingles lighter and thinner.  Fiberglass asphalt roof shingles usually have a longer warranty than organic asphalt roof shingles and also have a higher fire rating.  It is today’s roofing material of choice among roofing contractors and homeowners.   If you are installing or replacing a roof in Concord NC, Advanced Roofing and Exteriors is the best roofing contractor to call.

Types of shingles

No matter if they are organic or fiberglass roof shingles, the individual shingles typically measure about 12 inches by 36 inches.  They come two different types of roof shingles: three-tab shingles and architectural shingles.

Three-tab shingles have cutouts or tabs along their lower edge.  This causes each shingle to look like it is composed of three separate pieces once it is installed. These types of shingles have been used in roofing for a long time and are still one of the top choices for roofing material.

Architectural asphalt roof shingles have no cutouts, however the lower portion of the roof shingle has an additional asphalt layer.  This provides architectural asphalt roof shingles a dimensional, contoured look which is what gives them their name.  The asphalt sealant bonds the layers and helps reinforce the roof shingles’ waterproofness. These types of roof shingles are durable, but are not recommended for roofs with a low slope.  These types of roofs are more vulnerable to wind and rain.

No matter which type of asphalt roof shingles you choose, ensure they come with a long-life warranty.  Choose the best roof contractor in Charlotte NC, Advanced Roofing and Exteriors to install or replace your roof.
